My Sister-In-Law Stole Money 'Sprayed' On Us During Our Wedding Dance

The so-called 'money dance' when relatives and friends throw money on the happy couple is a popular tradition at Nigerian weddings. The fun of it might be spoiled, though, if the money causes a serious rift between the newly-related families.

Our reader, who wished for anonymity, narrates how a wedding surprise became an unpleasant issue.

I am a Rivers State indigene, but fell in love with a guy from Delta State. After nine years of courtship, we got married this June at a church in Warri, Delta.

During the reception, I asked two of my bridesmaids to collect the money the guests will "spray" on my husband and I while we dance. So, when the couple's first dance time came, I noticed that no less than N200,000 was scattered across the room.

At some point, the wife of my husband's eldest brother approached the two girls whom I asked for help earlier and told them she will handle the process by herself. I thought she wanted to please my husband and I. However, when she and the other woman who assisted her were done, the wife took the money from her helper and took it to her house. She did not return the money to us that day. When we confronted her on the next day, she had already counted the money. Out of the over N200,000, she brought only N49,260 back, but the sum that my father, aunt and one friend gave us was already over N50,000. We have tabled the matter before their family but dey said since we did not see my husband's brother's wife taking the money, we should just let the matter be.

Please advise me on what to do!
