According to BBC Newsbeat, Ronaldo said he was making the statement to end speculation about the relationship and his private life.
The couple, both 29, have both had international success and their relationship has featured in newspapers and magazines worldwide.
They weren't believed to be living together with Ronaldo based in the Spanish capital and Shayk travelling a lot to photo shoots.
The Real Madrid striker picked up the Ballon d'Or last week after being voted the world's best player, but Shayk didn't go with him to the ceremony in Zurich. Her absence led to rumours that their relationship was over, but now it's officially no more.
Although the footballer didn't specify why he broke up, a media in Portugal say that Shayk had a falling out with members of Ronaldo's family and that he was seeing someone else.
