A baby girl born with a protrusion resembling an elephant's trunk is being worshipped by locals who believe she is the reincarnation of the Hindu god Ganesha.
The girl, who has yet to be named, was born on Thursday with a bulge that obscures her nose in the Uttar Pradesh province, according to the Times of India.
Doctors said a gene mutation combined with possible malnutrition gave the girl the protuberance. But people in the area said there was something more divine at work.

The girl looks like the Hindu god of success, Lord Ganesha, who has an elephant's head on a human body, locals said.
People rejoiced at her birth, singing and dancing in the streets. So many visitors lined up to see the girl and give her offerings at her home in Aligarh that police had to keep the crowd under control.
The girl's father, Om Prakash, said he hopes the girl brings his family of six good luck because they could use it — he makes the equivalent of $4 a day as a fruit seller.
The girl's mother, Sarvesh, was still recovering Friday.

Dr Jayant Sharma from Jeevan Hospital cautioned about the child's mortality, "A baby boy was born with a trunk some time back. Unfortunately, he didn't survive. But if this girl does, the family can go for corrective surgery."
