In a ceremony organized in his home country of Togo on Sunday, he took his Shahada and converted to Islam from Christianity.
He was videoed taking his Shahada (The Islamic creed declaring belief in the oneness of Allah and the acceptance of Muhammad -Peace Be Upon Him- as Allah's Messenger), at the ceremony.
In May, London-based club Tottenham gave the player compassionate leave for the second time during the season to return to Togo to resolve some family issues, and for the past two months, Adebayor has been posting regular messages on Facebook which exposed his family problems.
He has accused his family of being selfish and particularly accused his junior brother of stealing 21 mobile phones from his team-mates at a French football academy.
Adebayor's mother Alice and his younger brother, Rotimi, finally apologized to him following a recent visit by a delegation from Nigeria.
The delegation was made up of family members and friends who all monitored the online drama between the family.
Having played for the Togolese national football team since 2000, Adebayor scored 29 goals in 63 matches. He played for Metz, Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid (on loan) before he signed a permanent deal with Tottenham Hotspur F.C in 2012. He has been playing in the club ever since.
