Homeless Boy Pictured Doing Homework On The Street

Photos of a boy doing his homework on the street under the light of a McDonald's restaurant in the Philippines have gone viral.

Despite his home being destroyed by fire, and with a widowed mother and a sick sibling, he is determined to finish his education.

Joyce Gilos Torrefranca, a student in Mandaue City, spotted the young boy recently and says the significance of the moment struck her. She said: "For me as a student, it just hit me a lot, like big time. I seldom go to coffee shops to study. And then this kid, he doesn't have anything but he has dedication to study."

Torrefranca posted the photos on Facebook with the caption, "I got inspired by a kid." Her post was promptly shared thousands of times. In the photos, which were taken in Cebu City, 9-year-old Daniel Cabrera is seen kneeling on the ground, resting his homework on a wooden stool.

According to ABS-CBN, Daniel's family has been homeless since their home was destroyed in a fire. They currently live in a nearby restaurant where Cabrera's mother works with one of Daniel's siblings.

Every night, Cabrera, who is a Grade 3 student, patiently studies under the lights of the nearby fast food chain branch.

He said despite their current situation, he is determined to finish his studies to be able to help his family.

Rosalina Detuya, one of Daniel's teachers is impressed by the boy's perseverance.

She said: "Daniel is a happy child. He is also intelligent and actually answers during class discussion, he really participates."

The local social welfare officer is said to have visited the Cabrera family to know what assistance it can offer to the boy and what livelihood assistance it can give to his mother.
