Mexican Crucifies Self On Cross After She Was Barred From Standing For Office

A candidate who was banned from standing in the Mexican local elections protested by crucifying herself on a cross, Daily Mail Online reports.

Rafaela Orozco Romo, 47, was standing as an independent candidate for the 31 District of Iztapalapa, the poorest borough in Mexico City, in the Federal District Legislative Assembly.

Despite gathering enough signatures to support her application, the National Election Institute prevented her from standing as she had forgotten to submit her expenses.

To make a stand, the aspiring politician crucified herself on a giant 20 foot wooden cross in front of the National Election Institute, in Mexico City.

Wearing no shoes and only white leggings and a cream top, she was tied to the cross for two hours.

She was accompanied by around 40 people carrying signs, who protested against the decision.

A doctor climbed up to monitor her blood pressure every 15 minutes to ensure her health was in check.

The stunt caused traffic chaos in the area and afterwards she slammed the decision to ban her from standing.

"To us it was a challenge, getting the support signatures, passing all the filters and getting registered. But now I don't know why they encourage us citizens to run in elections if they don't actually let us do it.

"Participating in the election was not my personal decision. The coordinators of neighbourhoods, transport and local businesses decided I should do this. The people decided and I only accepted," she said.

The local elections are being held in Mexico on June 7. The Legislative Assembly in Mexico consist of 66 'deputies', of which 40 are elected by the first-past-the-post system and 26 by proportional representation.

PDP, INEC Desperate To Cover Up Evidence Of Election Rigging In Rivers – APC

.....Chides Wike and REC Gesila Khan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has accused the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the State of desperately trying to cover up evidence of the brazen rigging of the recent general elections in the State. Rivers APC made the allegation while reacting to the suit lodged at the Federal High Court Port Harcourt, in which Rivers PDP and INEC are claiming that the INEC card readers meant to be used during the March 28 Presidential/National Assembly and April 11 Governorship/State Assembly elections in Rivers State were stolen by unknown persons, thus purportedly necessitating manual accreditation of ghost voters.

“By going to court to tell this childish story, Rivers INEC and its partner in crime, PDP, have only exposed their desperation to whitewash the charade they perpetrated in Rivers State in the name of elections on March 28 and April 11. This is nothing but self-indictment and amounts to an attempt to hide behind a finger which, of course, will fail woefully,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued Tuesday morning in Port Harcourt by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

The party dismissed Rivers INEC and PDP’s argument as untenable, saying: “These two organisations seemed to have conveniently forgotten that INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, expressly stated that where the card reader failed to work elections in such a place should be postponed till the next day, or in extreme cases, be called off. Contrary to this clear directive, the kindergarten criminals in PDP and Rivers INEC allocated figures to PDP’s candidates in their hurry to rob Rivers people of their power to elect the leaders of their choice. The revelation from the INEC headquarters that only 300,000 voters were accredited via card reader for the April 11 gubernatorial election whereas 1.1 million votes were credited to PDP guber candidate, Chief Nyesome Wike, provides conclusive proof that there was no election in Rivers State as our great party and International Election Observers have consistently maintained.”

Rivers APC consequently advised Chief Wike and other PDP candidates erroneously declared winner by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Gesila Khan, to stop parading themselves as Governor and lawmakers so as to minimise their embarrassment when they are removed by the Election Petition Tribunals.

The party also chided Rivers INEC and PDP leaders for claiming in court papers that those killed during the elections were victims of communal clashes and not as a result of electoral violence. “This absurd claim runs counter to overwhelming evidence and indicates that the consciences of those making them have become completely dead but we wish to assure them that Almighty God will certainly avenge the blood of these innocent citizens whose lives were brutally cut short by PDP leaders in their desperation to install Wike as Governor contrary to the wishes of the good people of Rivers State,” the statement concluded.

Shots Fired Amid Burundi Street Protests

Heavy gunfire has been heard after police fired teargas at protesters throwing stones in a suburb of Burundi's capital Bujumbura during a demonstration against the president's bid for a third term.

It was not immediately clear who fired the shots during Tuesday's clashes in Butarere district, where hundreds of protesters had gathered claiming Pierre Nkurunziza's third election run violated the constitution and a peace deal that ended civil war in 2005.

Protesters grabbed one policewoman and beat her up, accusing her of firing at them, a witness told Reuters news agency. She was later released, after sustaining injuries.

East African leaders, including Nkurunziza, will meet in Tanzania on Wednesday to discuss the crisis and rising tensions in a region with a history of ethnic conflict.

Al Jazeera's Malcom Webb, reporting from Nyakabiba, on the outskirts of Bujumbura, said protesters have been out in large numbers to put pressure on the region's leaders in advance of the summit.

"People here are very keen to get their message heard before heads of states from East Africa meet in Tanzania tomorrow," he said.

Peace summit

During more than two weeks of protests that have plunged Burundi into a crisis, police have fired in the air and have been seen shooting in the direction of protesters.

Police deny shooting any demonstrators.

At least 19 people have been killed so far. More than 50,000 people have fled Burundi to neighbouring states seeking safety.

The US, which provides support to the army, has demanded that police stop using "violent force" against protesters.

Nkurunziza has said he would press on with his election bid, although the US, other Western nations and several African countries have urged him not to run.

The EU and others have suspended or are reviewing some aid, saying violence must stop.

The constitution and the Arusha peace deal, which ended a conflict that pitted Burundi's majority Hutu ethnic group against minority Tutsis, both set a two-term presidential limit of five years each.

A constitutional court ruled that Nkurunziza's first term did not count because he was picked at the time by legislators not chosen in a popular vote.

Opponents say the court is biased and the UK, one of Burundi's donors, has also questioned the court's neutrality.

Oldest Man In Human History Discovered At Age 180, Says 'Death Has Forgotten Me'

Mahashta Mûrasi is a retired cobbler from northern India. He claims he was born in January 1835, making him not only the oldest man on earth, but the oldest to have ever lived, based on world records.

Indian officials say the man was born at home in the city of Bangalore on January 6, 1835, and is recorded to have lived in Vârânasî since 1903. He worked as a cobbler in the city until 1957, and retired at the venerable age of 122.

"I have been alive so long, that my great grand-children have been dead for years," laments Mr Mûrasi. "Somehow death has forgotten me... And now I have lost all hope to die."

The last doctor Mûrasi visited died in 1971, so there is little information available about his previous medical files, but all official documents to identify him, seem to confirm his claim.

Eminem Gives His Life To Jesus

Eminem has reportedly decided to put the world behind him and follow Jesus. The rapper's transformation was witnessed firsthand by an insider from his hometown of Detroit, through some of his recent actions.

The informer told AllHipHop.com that Eminem has been going through many changes as of late and has "removed himself from the depths of the music industry," and has also refused to conform to what is expected from him in the game.

In 1996, when Eminem released his debut album, Infinite. In a song titled 'It's Ok,' Eminem said:

"But in the midst of this insanity, I've found my Christianity through God and there's a wish he granted me. He showed me how to cope with this stress and hope for the best, instead of moping depressed."

Even though the album was not successful, Eminem made his major label debut with The Slim Shady LP in 1999. The album won Best Rap Album at the 41st Grammy Awards, and the first single, 'My Name Is,' won Best Rap Solo Performance.

Since that time, Eminem became known as a controversial lyricists - but he started writing inspirational songs such as 'Lose Yourself' from the 8 Mile soundtrack, 'Not Afraid,' the first single from his 2010 album, Recovery, and most recently 'Guts Over Fear' featuring Sia.

Protest In Eastern DRC After Deadly Attack By Rebels

Hundreds of people have protested in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo after a machete attack by suspected Ugandan rebels in which a local activist said at least six people were killed.

Teddy Kataliko told the Reuters news agency that seven other people were wounded and two missing after men with machetes and hatchets attacked a village on Monday evening.

Major Victor Masandi, an army spokesman, said he knew of three deaths.

Witnesses said police fired in the air on Tuesday to disperse a crowd protesting in the nearby town of Beni over the lack of security in the volatile region.

Millions died in eastern Congo in a 1998-2003 war that sucked in more than a half dozen neighbouring countries, and the region remains ravaged by dozens of armed groups who contest its vast reserves of gold, diamonds and tin.

Masandi blamed the attack on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group formed in the 1990s to fight the Ugandan government, but which now operates primarily on the Congolese side of the border.

Spate of massacres

He said Congolese troops exchanged fire with the assailants, forcing them to flee.

A spate of overnight massacres near Beni since October has killed more than 300 civilians.

The government and local activists have blamed the ADF, though analysts say other groups are likely to be involved as well.

The Congolese army launched a major operation against the ADF last year and says it has dramatically weakened the group.

But regular attacks against civilians in the region have continued, and the army blamed ADF fighters for an ambush on UN peacekeepers last week that killed two and wounded 13 Tanzanian troops.

The UN mission in the country has so far declined to officially assign responsibility for the ambush.

Jamil Mukulu, the ADF’s leader, was arrested last month in Tanzania.

Congo and Uganda have both sent teams to Tanzania to lobby for his extradition.

Aisha Buhari: No Girl Should Be Married Before 17

Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria's president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday said that no girl should be married before 17 years of age.

Mrs Buhari said this while speaking to Channels TV at the side-line of the Global Women Conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She said, "We have heard so much from the Ministers of Women affairs from different countries. We are trying to tally it with what is happening in Nigeria, to find out how we are lacking and in which aspect of women affairs that we are lacking and the ones that we have gone ahead. I think so far its quite encouraging. We just need to put everything in practice than being in theory.

"If the government can stand up and say every girl child must attend basic primary and secondary school education before getting married. I think nobody, no girl should be married before the age of 17 because if you really attend secondary school, you will have to be like 16 and 17 and I think by the time you are 18- 20, its quite a moderate time of having a child."

Woman Delivers Twins Who Have Two Different Fathers

A New Jersey woman has given birth to twins who have two different fathers. This was revealed after the woman, identified only as T.M., applied for child support, but it was discovered that the man she took to court as the father of her twins, only fathered one of them.

The case took root when the mother told the Passaic County Board of Social Services in the course of applying for benefits that A.S., her romantic partner, had fathered her twins, The Law Journal reported.

The board, in turn, filed an application to establish that he is indeed the father and force him to pay child support for the twins.

But the woman's claim slowly fell apart. She revealed in testimony that she had had s*x with a second, unidentified man within a week of having s*x with her romantic partner, so a DNA test was ordered.

And when the results came back, it was revealed that the two men had each fathered one of the twins, who are now toddlers.

The man originally described as the twins' father, identified in court documents only as A.S., will now have to pay child support only for the toddler who a DNA test showed was reliably his own.

Judge Mohammed accepted the results after testimony from Karl-Hans Wurzinger, the laboratory director of the Identity Testing Division at Laboratory Corporation of America, The Law Journal reported. Dr. Wurzinger, who has published a study saying that one in 13,000 reported paternity cases involved twins with separate fathers, testified that this was one of those rare cases: The woman's twins were fertilized by different fathers during the same menstrual cycle.

Dr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, called it a case of superfecundation, a rare phenomenon classically illustrated in medical textbooks with a black baby and a white baby who are twins.

Dr. Wu told the New York Times that a sperm can be viable for up to five days. So if the mother in this case had s*x with one of the men, ovulated, and then had s*x with the other — all within the course of just under a week — one man's sperm could have fertilized one egg, while the other's fertilized another.

Celebrations Erupt In Burundi Amid Coup Reports

Celebrations have broken out in Burundi's capital Bujumbura over reports of a coup against the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The developments came after an army officer reportedly announced on Wednesday that Nkurunziza and his government had been dismissed.

Major-General Godefroid Niyombare, who was fired by Nkurunziza as intelligence chief in February, made the announcement at a military barracks, reports said.

He was surrounded by several other senior officers from the army and police, Reuters news agency reported.

"Regarding President Nkurunziza's arrogance and defiance of the international community which advised him to respect the constitution and Arusha peace agreement, the committee for the establishment of the national concord decide: President Nkurunziza is dismissed, his government is dismissed too," Niyombare was quoted as saying.

Huge celebrations

Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb, reporting from Bujumbura, spoke of huge celebrations and some gunfire, although it was not immediately clear if the shots were being directed at the demonstrators or were celebratory in nature.

About 20 soldiers were deployed at the gate of the compound of the broadcaster in Bujumbura, he said.

"The road outside has been sealed off and journalists have been told to go inside," he said, adding that state radio and TV were still broadcasting.

It appears that the army has control of the state broadcaster and state-owned buildings, he said.

Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania where he is due to meet the leaders of the five-nation East African Community (EAC) - made up of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda as well as Burundi.

The president's office, in a message posted on Twitter, said an attempted coup had "failed".

"The situation is under control, there is no coup in Burundi," the message read.

A presidential adviser dismissed the news of the coup as "a joke", Reuters reported.

Agathon Rwasa, a leading Burundian opposition figure, told Al Jazeera he supported the move by military officials to remove Nkurunziza.

"I think it's right to rescue the people and the nation ... Nkurunziza is relying on his militia to slaughter innocent people," Rwasa said.

At least 19 people have died in Burundi since Nkurunziza announced his intention to run for a third term in elections due next month, prompting weeks of angry demonstrations.

Nigeria Army Repels Boko Haram Attack On Maiduguri

Boko Haram fighters who launched an attack on northeast Nigeria's largest city of Maiduguri have been repelled by Nigerian troops after intense clashes, residents and the army have said.

Dozens of fighters armed with heavy guns and rocket-propelled grenades stormed the northern outskirts of the city near Giwa military base, shooting and firing explosives indiscriminately, local witnesses told the AFP news agency.

The army said in a statement its soldiers had fought off "a band of terrorists" and that two bombs carried by female suicide bombers were detonated ahead of the attack.

There was no immediate information on any casualties.

The assault was the first on Maiduguri after a three-month lull following sweeping offensives on Boko Haram strongholds by a regional coalition of troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

"They came in through the Kayamla area around 6.30pm (17:30 GMT) when residents were preparing for evening prayers, firing in all directions and hurling bombs," said local resident Ibrahim Sidi.

"Soldiers from Giwa barracks deployed and intercepted them just on the outskirts of the city and engaged them in a fight that lasted for over 40 minutes."

Hajara Musa was among hundreds of residents of Fori neighbourhood who sought refuge in a nearby university campus to escape the clashes.

"Bullets were flying all over the place, we had to crouch and move on all fours as bullets whizzed overhead," Musa said.

'Terrifying'

Bilkisu Ahmad, a students at the Maiduguri University said they were ordered by the campus security guards to lay flat to avoid being hit by bullets and grenades.

"It was terrifying," Ahmad said.

After the fighters were forced to withdraw, some residents were able to return to their homes.

"Some of us have moved back to our homes after soldiers neutralised the attack but many others have fled into the city," Musa added.

A member of the civilian vigilantes assisting the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram said the attack could have been a reprisal for the losses incurred by Boko Haram in a Tuesday offensive on their camp some 40km outside the city.

"The attack was from all indication in response to the huge casualties Boko Haram suffered yesterday in the military operation on their camp in Mafa area in which some women and children were rescued," said the vigilante who asked not to be named.

Veteran actress and ageless beauty, Sola Sobowale has admitted that there is no money in acting and that she needs money to survive like everyone else.

Speaking to Vanguard in an interview, she said actresses and actors are not well paid because most people do not want to invest in movies, and movie producers mostly run at loss after producing movies and never get their production money back not to talk of making profit from it.

She used herself as an example, saying she shot a movie for N5.8 million 2 years ago, but she only made N3m back which was a loss. She also spoke about struggling in UK to work just to produce movies because it's her passion.

"It's a pity because you know the answer yourself. We need to feed ourselves. I shot a movie about 2 or 3 years ago called Adayeba Ote Part 1, 2, 3. When I was tired of recording, I had spent about N5.8 million and we had not finished editing. After editing, I did not make up to 3 million. I thank God I did not borrow any money to do that, if I had borrowed money what would have happened to me? I lived in England, I do all the jobs and I bring the money back to Nigeria to shoot a movie because this is me, this is my passion. When you talk about quality, where are you going to get the money for the quality?," she said, adding that;

"I am not talking about money but you know something in life? When you enjoy doing what you love, you will be fine. I am fine but I need money to survive. I want all my effort to be crowned because I work very hard so I can't just be doing it in vain."

Nollywood actress and mother of two, Mercy Aigbe-Gentry has come out to reveal why her first marriage did not work.

In an interview with Punch, the adorable actress made it known that her first marriage did not work because she was young, naive and most importantly she had issues with her mother-in-law. She revealed that her mother-in-law did not want her son to marry from another tribe. In her words, she said:

"I had a bad experience the first time, so I had some reservations and I just wanted to face my career, even though I loved him. I decided to put my trust in God and just go with the flow. I was happy and scared at the same time. Then, I was young and naive. Now, I handle issues differently. Also, the major reason my first marriage failed was because my ex-husband's mum did not want him to marry from another tribe," she said.

Mercy Aigbe and hubby, Lanre Gentry.
The fashionable actress went on to disclaim insinuations that all is not well with her present marriage, saying: "I do not think I have had any controversies since I got married. They were just misconceptions. People thought I married a married man and I was a second wife. What they did not know or care to know was that he was already a divorcee when we met."

Recall that there were reports in April 2013, that Mercy Aigbe was allegedly beaten by her husband at an event. A claim in which the lovebirds dismissed few days after.

Gunfire And Explosions Rock Burundi Amid Coup Claims

Heavy gunfire and explosions have rocked Burundi's capital Bujumbura a day after a senior army officer said he had dismissed the country's president following weeks of protests over a controversial third term, Al Jazeera's correspondent has said.

"We understand military factions loyal to the president are fighting those loyal to the coup leader," Malcolm Webb, reporting from Bujumbura, said.

"An independent TV station called Renaissance was attacked and burnt overnight," our correspondent said.

The clashes come amid a flurry of rumours over the status of the attempted coup on Wednesday, the whereabouts of President Pierre Nkurunziza, and who remains in control of the central African nation.

A top Burundian general and former intelligence chief Godefroid Niyombare said on Wednesday he had launched the coup, capping weeks of violent protests against Nkurunziza's controversial bid for a third term.

The general has ordered the closure of Bujumbura airport and the landlocked nation's borders, and declared he had the support of "many" high-ranking army and police officials.

But on Thursday morning, Burundi's armed forces chief announced that the attempted coup against Nkurunziza had failed, reported the AFP news agency.

General Prime Niyongabo said the coup had been stopped and that pro-Nkurunziza forces controlled the presidential office and palace.

"The national defence force calls on the mutineers to give themselves up," he added on state radio, also under the control of forces loyal to the president.

A spokesman for the anti-Nkurunziza camp, Burundi's police commissioner Venon Ndabaneze, told AFP the claim was false and that his side was in control of facilities, including Bujumbura's international airport.

"This message does not surprise us because the general has long been allied to the forces of evil and lies," he said.

Padraic MacOireachtaigh, a freelance journalist based in Bujumbura, told Al Jazeera it was difficult to identify who the army was fighting against, though it "seems to be another army-backed faction loyal to the president".

Confusion remains over the whereabouts of Nkurunziza, whose attempt to return home from neighbouring Tanzania after the coup was announced was blocked by opponents who seized the airport.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in celebration after the coup announcement, shouting "Victory!" and sounding car horns.

Cheering crowds were also seen walking alongside marching soldiers and climbing aboard tanks in the lakeside capital.

The latest radio announcement and the denial signals that the outcome of the coup attempt remains uncertain, and that overnight negotiations within the armed forces - which appears sharply divided over the issue - may have failed.

The crisis has raised fears of a return to widespread violence in the country, which is still recovering from a brutal 13-year civil war that ended in 2006.

Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the conflict, marked by massacres between the majority Hutu - to which Nkurunziza belongs - and minority Tutsi.

Speaking late on Wednesday to France24, General Niyombare said there was still "some confusion" and that "things will become clear" on Thursday.

Nkurunziza, who was endorsed by his ruling CNDD-FDD as candidate for the June 26 polls, became Burundi's president in 2005 after being installed by parliament. His supporters say he is eligible for a third term as he was not directly elected by people.

Burundi's constitution allows only two five-year terms, and critics say the move by the president to run for a third term goes against the 2006 peace accord which ended the civil war.
