President Michelle Bachelet poses with Valentina Maureira. The girl appealed to her to authorize euthanasia. |
Valentina Maueira suffers from cystic fibrosis, an incurable genetic defect that's attacked her lungs and other organs.
The President, Michele Bachelet has replied by visiting her in hospital.
The president's spokesman said that Valentina's wish couldn't be granted, but that the government would pay for her psychiatric treatment.
Meanwhile, Valentina's video has revived the argument in Chile over euthanasia, which is criminal in Chilean law.
"I asked to speak urgently with the president, because I am tired of living with this disease," Valentina said, adding that an older brother died of the same disease when he was six, so she knows what her fate would be.
Her parents are in support of her request. Her father, Fredy Maureira said: "this is so tough, but I have to respect her decision because she's the one who's suffering this illness.
"I already lost a 6-year-old son because I didn't have enough money and organs. Now my daughter just wants to die in a dignified way."
