Heavy Drinkers Are Less Intelligent, New Study Reveals

$

Heavy drinkers are not as bright as everyone else, a new study has revealed. But it is their lack of intelligence which leads them to drink too much in the first place - rather than their alcohol consumption - that is the cause of their lower IQ.

Previous research has linked a lower than average IQ with a higher than average alcohol intake, said the Swedish researchers.

But their latest tests suggest it is the lack of intelligence that comes first, not the habit for 'riskier drinking' that damages the brains.

In particular, lower IQ scores are recorded among young adult men who regularly get drunk, they told the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Other factors including economic background, social status and education can play a part too, they said after analysing government data on 50,000 young, adult men.

But even adjusting for other factors, there was a clear link between low IQ and young men and subsequent alcoholism problems.

The researchers analysed data collected from nearly 50,000 Swedish males born during 1949 to 1951 and who were conscripted for Swedish military service from 1969 to 1971.

The data included a psychological questionnaire on drinking habits and behaviour, followed by general IQ tests.

Those found to be at most risk of suffering alcohol related problems also had the lowest IQ scores, said researchers from Stockholm's Karolinska Institutet.

Daniel Falkstedt, a professor of public health at the university, said: "In this study of a general population, intelligence probably comes before the behaviour - in this case, alcohol consumption and a pattern of drinking in late adolescence.

"It could be the other way around for a minority of individuals, that is, when exposure to alcohol has led to cognitive impairment. But this is less likely to be found among young persons."

Researcher Sara Sjolund added: "We found that lower results on IQ tests in Swedish adolescent men are associated with a higher consumption of alcohol, measured in both terms of total intake and binge drinking.

"It may be that a higher IQ results in healthier lifestyle choices. Suggested explanations for the association between IQ and different health outcomes, could be childhood conditions, which could influence both IQ and health, or that a socio-economic position as an adult mediates the association."

Blind Man Sees Wife For The First Time In 10 Years [Video]

A blind man from Minnesota rejoiced after a retinal implant recently allowed him to see his wife for the first time in 10 years.

Once the 'bionic eye' was connected to prosthetic glasses, Allen Zderad, aged 68, was able to see outlines of objects, and human forms, like that of his wife.

"It's crude but it's significant," said Zderad. "It'll work!"

The tearful video of Zderad seeing his wife for the first time comes after a decade of suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that affects the retina. There is no known treatment or cure.

Zderad, found his way to the Mayo Clinic after his grandson approached Dr. Raymond Iezzi Jr. for treatment of early stages of the same condition.

While more adjustments are needed to the procedure before patients like Zderad will have clearer vision, Dr. Iezzi believes in the future this technology could have important implications.

But for now, Zderad is happy to be able to see his wife again.

"I would like to say I think he's a remarkable man, when you consider what he's overcome in dealing with his visual disability," said Dr. Iezzi. "I'm just humbled and tremendously impressed by him. I think he's an inspiration to us all."

It would have been a terrifying experience for any mother. However, Omotola later said that everything was in control as she appreciated the immediate help she got from people around and the embassy officials who helped revive the child.

After engaging in a war of words with Khloe Kardashian, her estranged husband Wiz Khalifa and her ex-boyfriend Kanye West, Amber Rose has had full plate of feuds of late.

According to MailOnline, the 31-year-old model appeared to be moving on - quite literally - as she was spotted checking out luxury properties for the sale in West Hollywood, Los Angeles County, California, on Monday.

The buxom beauty was sure to take on the task in typical eye-catching style, showing off her endless curves in a form-fitting black tank top with matching leggings and towering peep-toe heels.

Donning an on-trend pair of oversized tinted cat eye sunglasses, the tattooed star wore her hair in its usual closely-cropped, blonde style as she turned heads while house-hunting.

Her outing came two days after her ex, Wiz threw a second birthday party for their son Sebastian - nicknamed Bash - who didn't show up to because Amber allegedly refused to drop their child off off.

Sources close to Wiz say Amber was supposed to drop Bash off at the party and the two would celebrate his second birthday as parents.

Wiz later took to Twitter to write: "I've never voiced my true unhappiness out of fear of the person I was with and what she would do to make me more unhappy of anyone knew."

After several weeks of bated breath, the Senate on Tuesday approved a $52 per barrel oil benchmark for the 2015 budget. It also predicated the budget on an exchange rate of N190 to the dollar.

This is just as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has restated that she is not opposed to the release of the full forensic audit report on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), but expressed concern that it might be politicised by the "rabid opposition" in the country.

The resolution on the budget benchmark and exchange rate was the outcome of a one-hour closed-door session held by the senators before the commencement of plenary.

A source told ThisDay that several senators who spoke at the closed-door session, expressed concern over the state of the economy, regretting that the nation would have to resort to borrowing to finance some projects.

Nollywood Actress Opens Up On Her Relationship With Jimi Agbaje

Nollywood actress and mother of one, Grace Amah has been off the Nigerian movie scene for a while.

Declaring she is now back and better, the beautiful actress has declared that she is not in a hurry to say 'I do'. In a recent interview with Encomium, she described how she is calmly waiting for God’s time. The single mother, who recently added a year to her years, talked about her kind of man, and also addressed the reports that she is dating the Lagos PDP governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje.

Read excerpts from the exciting interview below:

What is your level of involvement in Mr Jimi Agbaje’s campaigns?
What you see drumming support for Jimi Agbaje with me and other artists is borne out of long time desire for alternative government in Lagos state.  We did not just start campaigning for Jimi Agbaje because of this election.  We started as a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) promoting what we vision as a New Lagos where education is not a slogan but a reality.  A state that is not in the pocket of one man but a state that belongs to Lagosians who are Nigerians from different walks of life and from different parts of the country who live and pay their taxes in the state.

We desire a new Lagos where the dignity of man is of high premium and infrastructure is not only given the due attention it deserves in all nooks and crannies of the state but must be working. Lagos State has the highest internally generated revenue in the whole federation yet many social facilities are not working.

Some parts of Lagos State can be without light for months or weeks and yet nobody takes responsibility. So, our movement FOR NEW LAGOS (#4NL) started before Jimi Agbaje came into the race for governorship of the state, but his vision and manifesto encapsulates the vision of our movement and so we joined his campaign to promote his vision for the state.  So, my involvement in the campaign is as a result of the adoption of the PDP governorship candidate by my organisation #4NL.

You featured prominently in one of his commercials. How were you contracted?
All members of #4NL featured in the commercial. It’s not for one person and nobody was contracted in that sense of contract. We support what we believe will bring good life to Lagosians.  We are not rented by anybody to campaign for Jimi Agbaje. So, the issue of how much I received does not arise.

Were you paid well and can you give us an idea of your fee?
From the background I gave you above, the issue of payment is not involved. We are promoting a cause we believe will help to promote and sustain our democracy. Lagos state desires change from the present government to another government so that Lagosians will live as people with equal stake and have sense of belonging in the state.

So, you chose to work for Agbaje and not APC’s Akinwumi Ambode because he represents the Lagos of your dream?
Yes, Agbaje’s vision and manifesto fall within the purview of the vision of our Movement for a new Lagos state which is an NGO.  APC has ruled Lagos for 16 years even though under different nomenclatures, the drivers are the same. The party has done its best. We do not believe it has new ideas different from what it has promoted in the state in the past 16 years. So, we need new ideas and vision that will guarantee sense of belonging to Lagosians, irrespective of where they come from.  We believe PDP holds that key and we support a man like Jimi Agbaje whose life from childhood typifies an ordinary Lagosian.  He has the ability to drive the new vision in the state.

What is new for Grace Amah?
What is new for Grace Amah?  As usual it’s a new year, new vision and sustained focus. I will focus on my project of attending to the needy in society, promote issues that will help keep away our society from the domination of the privileged at the expense of the poor. I want to drive a vision where everyone in society will be proud to identify with that society and willingly contribute to the building of the society in all ramifications. I want to remain as role model to the young ones that holds the key to the future of the society tomorrow.

Would you say you are fully back to Nollywood?
I am fully back to Nollywood.  I never left Nollywood.  I only needed to give the desired attention to the family which is the primary constituency of every human person. But I am fully back now. You will begin to see my new movies in due course because I’m getting busier.

Your son is four.  How does it feel?
My son would be four years next month.  That was the reason you were not seeing me on screen as usual. It’s a joy of every mother to see her child in good health and in a peaceful home.

What is your relationship with his father?
My son’s father is fine. There is no problem.  What is important is not relationship per se but the welfare or well being of the child. And I can confirm that my son is growing great and doing very well in school.

Does he pay special attention to him?
I don’t know what special attention is.  He pays attention to him and that is enough.

We are still asking if you’ve found love or you will stick to your baby daddy?
When I am ready to discuss my love life I will invite the press (laughs).

What do you really want from the man to spend the rest of your life?
Any man that I will spend the rest of my life with will be credible. He must have integrity. He must be caring and ready to tolerate our deficiencies.

Is it really difficult to find true love?
Finding true love depends on what the person searching for love wants. What I want in love may not be what another person wants.  I will marry at God’s appointed time.

You would be a year older on Monday, February 23, how are you celebrating your birthday?
Yes, my birthday is on Monday, February 23 and I would be honoured to have you join me as I mark it with the children at The Home of God’s Grace Orphanage, Agbowa Ikorodu, Lagos.  Time is 11 am.  I don’t know what my friends and fans are planning after the charity.

What are you most grateful to God and your greatest wish?
I am grateful to God for life and good health. He is a great provider and I will worship Him forever. I pray to live a fulfilled life worth emulating and pleasing to God Almighty.

Strange Objects Found Inside Goat Slaughtered For Burial In Ekiti

A strange development has occurred in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti South-West Local Government Area of Ekiti State. Residents revealed that on February 7, 2015, in Oke-Ibedo area of the town, some people who had slaughtered a goat for a burial were shocked to find some pieces of raw gold, coins, keys, padlocks and wedding ring among others inside the goat after cutting its belly,Daily Sun‎ reports.

The strange happening stirred up confusion and controversy as those who claimed they saw it happened, insisted it was true, while cynics wondered how the claim could be true. They were nevertheless enthralled by a daunting evidence of blood stained pieces of raw gold presented by the eyewitnesses.

According to residents, many of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, the development disrupted the ceremony, as guests for whom the goat was slaughtered went back to their homes in fear and embarrassment. The goat owned by a yet-to-be identified old woman who had given it out to a friend.

The woman whom the goat was given, it was gathered, had reared it for several years after which it did not reproduce. She, however, got tired of rearing the goat and sold it to the people who needed it for the ceremony.

A resident of Ilawe, simply identified as Amina Ibeji said: "Yes, it is true that a strange goat had some pieces of raw gold in its belly after it was slaughtered in this town. The incident happened last week. The people who found this out wanted to use the goat as supplementary meat for their ceremony, but they were both embarrassed and shocked to find the glittering objects which they later described as pieces of raw gold inside the animal."

Another resident, Yomi Adeayo, who works in a beer parlour said: "It is true that people found some strange objects in a goat that was slaughtered for a ceremony. It happened in Oke-Ibedo area of this town. The incident attracted a large crowd because evil news spreads faster. The strange objects were later identified as pieces of raw gold.

"I didn't witness it, but I have the pictures of the objects on my phone. I had taken it from a friend who took the photographs at the scene. It was gathered later that the people who witnessed it took the objects and the goat to the king's palace. Since then, the matter had been laid to rest."

The block of flats where the couple were trapped.
According to South Africa's Daily Sun, the man had been warned: "Leave my wife alone! I have put special muthi in her punani." But the cheaters again ignored the warning and ended up getting stuck together. They found themselves screaming for help, begging to be separated.

The rumour quickly spread that a cheating man had died after he got stuck in his lover's punani. And a crowd of about 2,000 people gathered at Dena Court in Yeoville, Joburg.

The police had to be called. People were allegedly pepper sprayed and the amaBerethe chased people away with sjamboks. Many people claimed the police fired rubber bullets.

Priscilla Ndlovu (34) who claims to be a resident at the same flats told Daily Sun they heard screams from the room where the woman stays on Thursday night.

"At first we thought it was just the screams of s*xual pleasure, but it turned to be screams for help," said Priscilla.

She said they called the security who forced the door open and saw the naked man on top of the naked woman pleading for help to be separated, but nobody could force them apart.

She said everyone was shocked and afraid of what they saw. "We always hear of such things happening but we have never seen it," she said.

A family member of the husband of the cheating wife said the husband had been complaining about his cheating wife.

"He complained she was going out with his friend," said the woman.

"I think he locked his wife to catch the man she's cheating with."

She said in Zimbabwe, where they come from, it is a common way of catching cheating men and women.

"No one will separate them until the husband comes back from Zimbabwe to unlock them," she said.

A Zimbabwean who spoke to Daily Sun said locking a woman with muthi was a common way of catching and punishing cheating lovers in their country.

By Friday morning, when the crowd saw the ambulance at the flats they chanted: "We want to see them! Show us the cheaters!"

Cops were kept busy keeping the crowd at bay.

Three streets were blocked off, causing major traffic jams and motorists had to use alternative routes. The ambulance finally raced off at high speed.

It is not known if the couple were inside. Neither the police nor the paramedics could confirm if the two were taken to hospital or not.

Sangoma Mathabo Mofokeng said husbands put muthi in their wives' punani to lock their women.

"There is muthi that is used by some men to catch cheating couples," she said.

13 Proven Ways To Overcome Sleeplessness

There are many health hazards that have been linked to poor sleep. Sleep deprivation seems to be a common problem. Good sleep is important for your entire health and this is why you must ensure that you get the best of your sleep time.

It is recommended that you get between 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Getting too little or too much of this can have consequences on your health. The purpose of this article however, is to focus on sleep deprivation.

A lack of adequate sleep has been found to:

· Impair your immunity – your body's defence mechanism against infections

· It can lead to a pre-diabetic state that makes you feel hungry even though you have eaten.

· Adversely affects memory interfering with the ability to think clearly

· Promote the growth of tumors including cancers.

· Impairs problem solving ability and performance on mental and physical activities

If you find yourself unable to sleep at night consistently and you try so hard to find sleep with no avail, then you may be suffering from Insomnia.

There are some very effective steps that you can take in overcoming sleeplessness and they are easy steps that you can start taking today to optimize your sleep and health.

1. Put off the lights - Light usually send signals to your brain that it is time to wake. You must therefore constantly remind your brain that it’s time to sleep by putting off the lights.

2. Maintain an optimal temperature - Sleeping in a room too hot or too cold can adversely tell on your sleep. You can literarily know yourself that you are not too comfortable sleeping. You should therefore take steps to sleep in a right and comfortable room temperature.

3. Put the Clock off your site - Many people do different things while they are awake at night. One of the things is that many people keep staring at the clock. They could tell when it was 1 a.m, 2 a.m., 3 a.m….. and so on. Keeping the clock away from your sight can therefore help.

4. Use your bed only for sleeping - We may be often used to using our bed for so many things. We watch TV, write, and do some work on the bed. Our body gets used to this and it becomes difficult to drift into sleep when you are ready. Use your bed only for sleeping and then your body understands that it is time to sleep whenever you get in bed.

5. Maintain the timing - It is great if you can go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. With this, your body gets to understand when it is sleep time.

6. Avoid drinking within 2 hours of bed - When you drink too close to your bed time, your sleep easily gets interrupted by the urge to ease yourself. Limit your drinking to 2 hours before bed time.

7. Use the bathroom before bed - Some people will find themselves awake and unable to sleep immediately they wake up to use the bathroom. You can avoid this by using the bathroom shortly before you go to bed.

8. Avoid caffeine - If you find it difficult to sleep, then you can check your caffeine intake. Caffeine is not only found in coffee, it is also found in tea, some drugs and in some drinks like coke.

9. Exercise - Exercising regularly can help boost your sleep. You must however avoid exercising too close to bed time.

10. Avoid eating too close to bedtime - Eating too close to bedtime can affect your sleep. This is because it raises your blood sugar which can delay sleep.

11. Learn to shower before bed - Taking a shower can help give you a refreshing feeling great for sleep. It can help normalize your body temperature making it easier to fall asleep.

12. Don't work too late into the night - This will help you relax and remove the anxiety and tension associated with work.

13. Avoid Alcohol - Alcohol may make you feel drowsy, but the drowsiness is usually short-lived. You often wake up and remain awake for long after a short while.

The ongoing war between former president Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan took a remarkable turn yesterday during the 90th birthday celebration of ex-leader Shehu Shagari in Sokoto, as Obasanjo avoided the president.

It was reported that Obasanjo arrived when President Goodluck Jonathan was inside Shehu Shagari's house but refused to come out of his vehicle until Goodluck Jonathan had finished and left.

Those present could not stop laughing as the former president was repeatedly poking his tongue at them from inside his vehicle.

Also present at the event were the former head of the interim government, Ernest Shonekon, as well as ex-heads of state, Generals Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Obasanjo and Jonathan have been at loggerheads following the former's constant attacks on the Jonathan government.

At the celebration President Goodluck Jonathan and the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), congratulated the former president Shagari, on his 90th birthday.

Buhari's Full Speech At Chatham House, London

"Prospects for Democratic Consolidation in Africa: Nigeria’s Transition" - By General Muhammadu Buhari.

Chatham House, London, 26 February 2015.

Permit me to start by thanking Chatham House for the invitation to talk about this important topic at this crucial time. The 2015 general election in Nigeria is generating a lot of interests within and outside the country. This is understandable. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest economy, is at a defining moment, a moment that has great implications beyond the democratic project and beyond the borders of my dear country.

So let me say upfront that the global interest in Nigeria’s landmark election is not misplaced at all and indeed should be commended, for this is an election that has serious import for the world. I urge the international community to continue to focus on Nigeria at this very critical moment. Given increasing global linkages, it is in our collective interests that the postponed elections should hold on the rescheduled dates, that they should be free and fair, that their outcomes should be respected by all parties, and that any form of extension, under whichever guise, is unconstitutional and would not be tolerated.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, the collapse of communism and the end of the Cold War, democracy became the dominant and most preferred system of government across the globe. That global transition has been aptly captured as the triumph of democracy and the ‘most pre-eminent political idea of our time.’ On a personal note, the phased end of the USSR was a turning point for me. If you will, that was my own road to Damascus experience. It convinced me that change can be brought about without firing a single shot. As you all know, I had been a military head of state in Nigeria for twenty months. We intervened because we were unhappy with the state of affairs in our country.

We wanted to arrest the drift. Driven by patriotism, influenced by the prevalence and popularity of such drastic measures all over Africa and elsewhere, we fought our way to power. But the global triumph of democracy has shown that another, and a preferable, path to change is possible. It is an important lesson I have carried with me since, and a lesson that is not lost on the African continent.

In the last two decades, democracy has grown strong roots in Africa. Elections, once so rare, are now so commonplace. As at the time I was a military head of state between 1983 and 1985, only four African countries held regular multi-party elections. But the number of electoral democracies in Africa, according to Freedom House, jumped to 10 in 1992/1993 then to 18 in 1994/1995 and to 24 in 2005/2006.

According to the New York Times, 42 of the 48 countries in Sub-Sahara Africa conducted multi-party elections between 1990 and 2002. The newspaper also reported that between 2000 and 2002, ruling parties in four African countries (Senegal, Mauritius, Ghana and Mali) peacefully handed over power to victorious opposition parties. In addition, the proportion of African countries categorized as not free by Freedom House declined from 59% in 1983 to 35% in 2003. Without doubt, Africa has been part of the current global wave of democratisation.

But the growth of democracy on the continent has been uneven. According to Freedom House, the number of electoral democracies in Africa slipped from 24 in 2007/2008 to 19 in 2011/2012; while the percentage of countries categorised as ‘not free’ increased from 35% in 2003 to 41% in 2013. Also, there have been some reversals at different times in Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Mali, Madagascar, Mauritania and Togo.

While we can choose to look at the glass of democracy in Africa as either half full or half empty. While you can’t have representative democracy without elections, it is equally important to look at the quality of the elections and to remember that mere elections do not democracy make. It is globally agreed that democracy is not an event, but a journey. And that the destination of that journey is democratic consolidation—that state where democracy has become so rooted and so routine and widely accepted by all actors.

With this important destination in mind, it is clear that though many African countries now hold regular elections, very few of them have consolidated the practice of democracy. It is important to also state at this point that just as with elections, a consolidated democracy cannot be an end by itself. I will argue that it is not enough to hold series of elections or even to peacefully alternate power among parties.

It is much more important that the promise of democracy goes beyond just allowing people to freely choose their leaders. It is much more important that democracy should deliver on the promise of choice, of freedoms, of security of lives and property, of transparency and accountability, of rule of law, of good governance and of shared prosperity. It is very important that the promise embedded in the concept of democracy, the promise of a better life for the generality of the people, is not delivered in the breach.

Now, let me quickly turn to Nigeria. As you all know, Nigeria’s fourth republic is in its 16th year and this general election will be the fifth in a row. This is a major sign of progress for us, given that our first republic lasted five years and three months, the second republic ended after four years and two months and the third republic was a still-birth. However, longevity is not the only reason why everyone is so interested in this election.

The major difference this time around is that for the very first time since transition to civil rule in 1999, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing its stiffest opposition so far from our party the All Progressives Congress (APC). We once had about 50 political parties, but with no real competition. Now Nigeria is transiting from a dominant party system to a competitive electoral polity, which is a major marker on the road to democratic consolidation. As you know, peaceful alternation of power through competitive elections have happened in Ghana, Senegal, Malawi and Mauritius in recent times.

The prospects of democratic consolidation in Africa will be further brightened when that eventually happens in Nigeria.

But there are other reasons why Nigerians and the whole world are intensely focussed on this year’s elections, chief of which is that the elections are holding in the shadow of huge security, economic and social uncertainties in Africa’s most populous country and largest economy.

On insecurity, there is a genuine cause for worry, both within and outside Nigeria. Apart from the civil war era, at no other time in our history has Nigeria been this insecure. Boko Haram has sadly put Nigeria on the terrorism map, killing more than 13,000 of our nationals, displacing millions internally and externally, and at a time holding on to portions of our territory the size of Belgium. What has been consistently lacking is the required leadership in our battle against insurgency.

I, as a retired general and a former head of state, have always known about our soldiers: they are capable, well trained, patriotic, brave and always ready to do their duty in the service of our country. You all can bear witness to the gallant role of our military in Burma, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur and in many other peacekeeping operations in several parts of the world. But in the matter of this insurgency, our soldiers have neither received the necessary support nor the required incentives to tackle this problem. The government has also failed in any effort towards a multi-dimensional response to this problem leading to a situation in which we have now become dependent on our neighbours coming to our rescue.

Let me assure you that if I am elected president, the world will have no cause to worry about Nigeria as it has had to recently, that Nigeria will return to its stabilising role in West Africa, and that no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be lost to the enemy because we will pay special attention to the welfare of our soldiers in and out of service, we will give them adequate and modern arms and ammunitions to work with, we will improve intelligence gathering to choke Boko Haram's financial and equipment channels, we will be tough on terrorism and tough on its root causes by initiating a comprehensive economic development plan promoting infrastructural development, job creation, agriculture and industry in the affected areas.

We will always act on time and not allow problems to irresponsibly fester, and I, General Muhammadu Buhari, will always lead from the front and return Nigeria to its leadership role in regional and international efforts to combat terrorism.

On the economy, the fall in prices of oil has brought our economic and social stress into full relief. After the rebasing exercise in April 2014, Nigeria overtook South Africa as Africa’s largest economy. Our GDP is now valued at $510 billion and our economy rated 26th in the world. Also on the bright side, inflation has been kept at single digit for a while and our economy has grown at an average of 7% for about a decade. But it is more of paper growth, a growth that, on account of mismanagement, profligacy and corruption, has not translated to human development or shared prosperity. A development economist once said three questions should be asked about a country’s development: one, what is happening to poverty? Two, what is happening to unemployment? And three, what is happening to inequality?

The answers to these questions in Nigeria show that the current administration has created two economies in one country, a sorry tale of two nations: one economy for a few who have so much in their tiny island of prosperity; and the other economy for the many who have so little in their vast ocean of misery. Even by official figures, 33.1% of Nigerians live in extreme poverty. That’s at almost 60 million, almost the population of the United Kingdom. There is also the unemployment crisis simmering beneath the surface, ready to explode at the slightest stress, with officially 23.9% of our adult population and almost 60% of our youth unemployed. We also have one of the highest rates of inequalities in the world. With all these, it is not surprising that our performance on most governance and development indicators (like Mo Ibrahim Index on African Governance and UNDP’s Human Development Index.) are unflattering. With fall in the prices of oil, which accounts for more than 70% of government revenues, and lack of savings from more than a decade of oil boom, the poor will be disproportionately impacted.

In the face of dwindling revenues, a good place to start the repositioning of Nigeria's economy is to swiftly tackle two ills that have ballooned under the present administration: waste and corruption. And in doing this, I will, if elected, lead the way, with the force of personal example.

On corruption, there will be no confusion as to where I stand. Corruption will have no place and the corrupt will not be appointed into my administration. First and foremost, we will plug the holes in the budgetary process. Revenue producing entities such as NNPC and Customs and Excise will have one set of books only. Their revenues will be publicly disclosed and regularly audited. The institutions of state dedicated to fighting corruption will be given independence and prosecutorial authority without political interference. But I must emphasise that any war waged on corruption should not be misconstrued as settling old scores or a witch-hunt. I'm running for President to lead Nigeria to prosperity and not adversity.

In reforming the economy, we will use savings that arise from blocking these leakages and the proceeds recovered from corruption to fund our party’s social investments programmes in education, health, and safety nets such as free school meals for children, emergency public works for unemployed youth and pensions for the elderly. As a progressive party, we must reform our political economy to unleash the pent-up ingenuity and productivity of the Nigerian people thus freeing them from the indignities of poverty.

We will run a private sector-led economy but maintain an active role for government through strong regulatory oversight and deliberate interventions and incentives to diversify the base of our economy, strengthen productive sectors, improve the productive capacities of our people and create jobs for our teeming youths. In short, we will run a functional economy driven by a worldview that sees growth not as an end by itself, but as a tool to create a society that works for all, rich and poor alike. On March 28, Nigeria has a decision to make. To vote for the continuity of failure or to elect progressive change. I believe the people will choose wisely.

In sum, I think that given its strategic importance, Nigeria can trigger a wave of democratic consolidation in Africa. But as a starting point we need to get this critical election right by ensuring that they go ahead and depriving those who want to scuttle it the benefit of derailing our fledgling democracy. That way, we will all see democracy and democratic consolidation as tools for solving pressing problems in a sustainable way, not as ends in themselves.

Permit me to close this discussion on a personal note. I have heard and read references to me as a former dictator in many respected British newspapers including the well regarded Economist. Let me say without sounding defensive that dictatorship goes with military rule, though some might be less dictatorial than others.

I take responsibility for whatever happened under my watch. I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future. So before you is a former military ruler and a converted democrat who is ready to operate under democratic norms and is subjecting himself to the rigours of democratic elections for the fourth time.

You may ask: why is he doing this? This is a question I ask myself all the time too. And here is my humble answer: because the work of making Nigeria great is not yet done, because I still believe that change is possible, this time through the ballot, and most importantly, because I still have the capacity and the passion to dream and work for a Nigeria that will be respected again in the comity of nations and that all Nigerians will be proud of.

I thank you for listening.

Christina Milian succeeded in drawing yet more attention to herself as she deliberately put her b00bs on display at a Hollywood premiere on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.

The 33-year-old actress and singer decided to wear an open blue silk jacket – without a top or bra underneath – as she posed in front of photographers at the premiere of 'Focus' which held at TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

The two-piece was a rather bold red carpet choice, and the pretty star almost pulled it off - until she turned to the side and flashed a little too much.

Christina fastened her open jacket with strategically placed fashion tape but it barely kept her b00bs in place and could be seen straining against the inside of her jacket.

Bruce Jenner reportedly plans on being a lesbian once he completes his gender reassignment and becomes 'Belinda.'

The 65-year-old Olympic gold medalist has told loved ones that he "can't imagine himself being attracted to men."

A source close to the Kardashians said in the March 9 issue of Star Magazine, that "he's not sure if the hormone treatments will change how he feels about men. But right now he says that he still likes women. He's always loved the ladies. He longs to be feminine and pretty - and also to feel the touch of another woman."

The source also revealed that the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star still has "deep feelings" for Ronda Kamihira. He and his close pal have been the target of dating rumors since last year after they were spotted attending an Elton John concert together last year.

"They're not super serious right now, but no one would be surprised if their relationship continued to progress," the insider continued.

According to the source, Jenner wants to get back into the dating game once he completes his transition into a woman.

"Bruce wants to settle down with a woman. Whoever she is, she will be the first to love Bruce for who he really is. She'll be his one true love," the source said.

Jenner has proven himself to be a serial monogamist, fathering two children with each of his three wives.

He had Burt, 36, and Casey, 34, with his first wife Chrystie Crownover before they ended their marriage of nine years in 1981.

He was then married to second wife Linda Thompson for five years, whom he shares sons Brandon, 33, and Brody, 31, with.

After divorcing Thompson, he married Kris Jenner, who bore daughters Kendall, 19, and Kylie, 17.

Rumors of Jenner's transition first surfaced in 2013 after he split from Kris and moved into a Malibu beach bachelor pad.

The couple's divorce is set to be finalized March 23 due to a six-month state legal requirement.

Jenner's transition into a woman will be addressed and explored in the upcoming "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" season 10, which premieres March 15 on E!.

Violet Moyo.
A Zimbabwean miad has been jailed for 22 years for killing a 10-month-old baby who she wrapped in a blanket and stuffed in a drawer to stifle his cries, The Chronicle reports.

Violet Moyo, aged 22, of of Bulawayo's Cowdray Park suburb killed infant Ethan Phiri in a "cruel and brutal manner", Bulawayo High Court Judge Lawrence Kamocha ruled yesterday (Thursday, Feb. 26)

"Time has come for such people to be dealt with in a harsh and adequate manner," he was quoted as saying.

Ethan's parents left Moyo in charge of their baby for the day on February 1, 2013.

The court heard this week how Moyo failed to console the baby when he woke up. She had wrapped him in a heavy blanket and stuffed him into a drawer, where he suffocated.

"Despite the baby's distressed cry, you chose to ignore him and went to the lounge to watch a television movie, which is quite clear... that you really wanted to kill him," Kamocha said.

"You're accordingly found guilty of murder with actual intent."

Moyo testified she put Ethan in the drawer because she had been possessed by an evil spirit. She also claimed she had felt "moody" on the day of the murder because she was pregnant, and was irritated by the toddler's cries.

"I gave the baby porridge and moments later he started crying and I tried to find the reason why he was crying but couldn't get any. I then got possessed by an evil spirit and wrapped the baby with a blanket and put him in a headboard drawer and closed it. I went to the sitting room to watch television and left it there until it suffocated. I panicked when I discovered that the baby was no longer breathing," she said.

The baby suffocated due to lack of oxygen. After about three hours, Moyo went back to check on the baby and found him dead. The court heard that Moyo lied to neighbours that the baby had fallen off the bed.

Stolen Baby Found After 17 Years

Celeste Nurse seen with Zephany before she was abducted from Groote Schuur hospital.
A baby stolen from her sleeping mother's arms shortly after birth has been found by the family through an astonishing coincidence 17 years later, South African police say.

A 50-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with kidnapping after pupils noticed a remarkable likeness between the 17-year-old and her younger biological sister, who started attending the same school this year.

DNA tests have confirmed that the older girl is the daughter of Celeste and Morne Nurse, who was snatched from Groote Schuur hospital as a three-day-old baby named Zephany in April 1997, local media reported.

Zephany Nurse, as pictured on the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children website.
The parents, who later had three more children, have celebrated Zephany's birthday every year since she was kidnapped, never giving up hope that their first-born child would come back to them some day, the Cape Argus said.

Zephany grew up with a different name, and a different family, never knowing she was not their real daughter.

But last month her biological sister, Cassidy Nurse, started high school at the same school as Zephany, and fellow pupils noticed a startling resemblance she bore to a final-year student.

When Cassidy told her parents about the girl, they invited her home for a cup of coffee.

When they saw the striking resemblance between the girls, they contacted the police.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andr Traut confirmed that a woman had been arrested. She and her husband, who is also in his fifties, have no other children.

"The suspect is being charged with kidnapping, fraud and contravening sections ... of the Children's Act, in that she fraudulently pretended that she was the biological mother of a child," Lieutenant-Colonel Traut said.

"The kidnapped girl has since been placed in the care of the Department of Social Services of the Western Cape government."

Without knowing it, the Nurse family had been living within a couple of kilometres of their kidnapped daughter.

Since yesterday, social media feeds across the globe have had only one question on their mind: Is this dress white and gold or is it black and blue.

The dress has thrown the Internet into a tizzy with people across social media  arguing about whether a picture depicting a perfectly nice bodycon dress is blue with black lace fringe or white with gold lace fringe. And neither side is standing down from this fight.

It is said that the entire debate began on Thursday (Feb. 25) when Scottish singer Caitlin McNeill posted the enigmatic dress to Tumblr with this caption: "Guys please help me – is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the f–k out."

Almost everyone with an Internet connection has an opinion on this dress. Pop princess Taylor Swift tweeted: "I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow. I'm confused and scared. PS it's obviously blue and black."

Actress Anna Kendrick stated: "If that's not white and gold the universe is falling apart. Seriously what is happening????"

Even reality star Kim Kardashian entered the war saying, "What colour is that dress? I see white & gold. Kanye sees black & blue, who is colour blind?"

Oscar winner Julianne Moore had her say, writing back to TV couple Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak: "What's the matter with you guys, it’s white and gold."

Miley Cyrus too waded in the debate posting on Instagram: "What's the deal with this f**king dress? #blueandblack."

@BuzzFeedBen tweeted: "My daughter thinks it's blue and green and we are headed to the ER."

@DennysDiner added, "stops furiously scribbling amidst dozens of coffee cups* there is no dress. it is not the dress that changes colours, it is only yourself."

@ASvPDuke tweeted: "What if the illuminati is trying to distract us from something they're doing rn with #TheDress"

@Irelay tweeted: "My mom just seriously asked if I was on drugs or going blind, a dress is literally tearing my family apart. #whiteandgold"

@JustinBieber tweeted: "And for everyone asking I see blue and black"

Finally, The Illuminati posted: "We started the What Colors Are This Dress trending topic to confuse the masses. You can thank us later."

8 Health Benefits of S₤x You Never Knew

Much has been said about the downsides of s₤x and so little about the benefits. As much as s₤x can bring STDs and other ills; it can also provide several benefits that are great for your health. Many however see s₤x as only a means of pleasure and childbirth. It is therefore worth knowing some of the health benefits of sex.

1. Immune Boosting - Eating well, getting enough sleep, and getting vaccinated are all important in boosting your immune system. Add regular sex to these and you have a great immune system that defends your body against infective organisms. This is because research has shown that those that are sexually active had a higher blood level of certain antibodies than those that were not so active sexually and these antibodies help you fend off infections.

2. Bladder control for women - About 30% of women will have urinary incontinence at one time or the other in their lives. This is when a person passes urine without intending to. Studies have shown that women who had sex regularly were less likely to develop urinary incontinence as it helps strengthen their pelvic muscles which is important for bladder control.

3. Lowers Blood Pressure - People who had more sex have been found to have a lower blood pressure compared to others, ensuring that they stay healthy. One study found that those who regularly had sex had a lower systolic (the numerator in your B.P measurement) compared to those who did not.

4. Sex is good exercise - It’s been found that on the average, you burn about five calories per minute while having sex. This can be a good source of exercise for those that hardly have time to exercise. The benefits of exercise are quite numerous and sex delivers some of those benefits.

5. Reduces Risk for Heart Attack - Men who had sex regularly were found to have a 50% lesser risk of developing a heart attack. This is not only because it raises your heart rate which is great; it also keeps your sex hormone, oestrogen and testosterone, in balance which are important hormones and their balance can help avoid conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.

6. Better Sleep - You may have noticed that you sleep better after sex. This is because the hormone Prolactin is usually released after an orgasm. This hormone helps with relaxation and the feeling of sleepiness.

7. Reduces Stress - The arousal associated with sex is great in easing stress. This is because your brain releases some chemicals that help in exciting your entire body. Sex can also help stimulate happiness and boosts self-esteem.

8. Reduces Pain - Sex can help reduce the feeling of pain. Sex helps release a hormone that usually raises your pain threshold. Sexual stimulation can combat chronic pain such as the pain associated with arthritis.

In conclusion, remember that there is no substitute for safe sex and that abstinence is the only way of avoiding STDs, including HIV, for the unmarried ones. If you must do it, then use a condom.

This home video shows the eerie moment a one-year-old girl was pulled to the ground by a mysterious unseen force.

Lexi Hood was playing peek-a-boo with her father, Gareth, and mother, Charlene, 31, at home in Bridgend, Wales, when she was suddenly knocked to the ground.

Mr Hood, 35, said his daughter, who he described as 'sturdy on her feet', said 'naughty boy' as if she was telling someone off.

He added that strange creaking sounds had been heard in the house ever since.

The clip, taken while the family was watching a film three weeks ago, shows Lexi standing in front of the TV with her hands over her eyes.

Giggling, she peeks at her father before suddenly falling to the floor - her arms out to the side as if being pushed or pulled.
