Read Nigerian Rapper Olamide's Grass To Grace Story

When grassroots-to-limelight Yoruba rapper, Dagrin, died in a road crash in 2010, the lamentation that greeted his passage had hardly died down when some other up-and-coming singers started scheming to fill the vacuum created.

As is done when star artistes pass on, they wanted to take advantage of the gap, with some of them not minding becoming new Dagrin…But as it normally happens in such a circumstance. All of them failed to realise their dreams.

The lesson they failed to learn is that, no artiste can really replace another one. That is why no one has been able to replace a Fela, Tupac or Sikiru Ayinde Barrister in the real sense of it. People may try to be opportunistic but it will be extremely difficult to convince listeners or the audience that the dead man has resurrected.

Instead of aping the fallen hero, perhaps the best thing to do is to hone one’s talent and work hard at one’s style, especially if it is close to that of the deceased. If it is done well, the market will have no other option than to look in one’s direction. This seems to be how rave-of-the-moment and weird Yoruba rapper, Olamide has proved wiser than his peers who were trying to ape Dagrin.

Also called Young Erikina, the artiste has demonstrated much versatility in his songs, Eni Duro and Bend down Low, to the extent that he has broken into the league of the big players. While it has been rumoured that a major telecoms player has struck a N25m deal with him, D’banj’s new strategic romance with Olamide made him (Olamide) the subject on the lips of many followers of the sector.

Apart from featuring him in a song, there are reports that the younger act has been signed onto D’banj’s label, a move that, many believe, is going to be mutually rewarding.Such a move would naturally make some guys remember D’banj’s epic divorce with Don Jazzy, and either sees the romance with the younger act either as a survivalist ploy or a strategic one.

But the fact is it is a good story for Olamide and a sign that he is doing well and may just be one of the artistes to dictate the space in the next few years.Although there has not been any official confirmation, D’banj’s younger brother, Kay Switch, welcomed Olamide to the family on Twitter on Wednesday. Tweeting via his handle, @kayswitch, Kay Switch stated, “Welcome to the family, Baddo.” Baddo is Olamide’s nick name. The music star is currently in Atlanta with D’banj for a music performance.

See The First Photo Ever Uploaded To The Internet

The first picture ever uploaded on the web was posted by Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web) on behalf of a comedy band called Les Horrible Cernettes.

Report

Every day millions of photos are uploaded to the Internet on countless blogs, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc. But have you ever wondered what the very first image upload looked like? Well look no further, because the tech site Motherboard has done the digging for you.

In 1992, a picture of the parody band Les Horribles Cernettes, that was digitally altered in Photoshop, earned the distinction of becoming the first Web photo upload. So who are these ladies pictured in the image? The group of ladies were lab employees who worked for CERN, a research laboratory in Geneva where major discoveries have been made, including the project that started the World Wide Web, created by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee.

Berners-Lee was looking to test a Web system that could support photos and asked IT developer Silvano de Gennaro to provide an image. De Gennaro chose an edited image of the ladies of Les Horribles Cernettes, whose nerdy song lyrics included the words "you say you love me but you never beep me." Part of the reason the upload was so revolutionary was because the Internet was previously seen as a place for conducting serious business, not having fun.

De Gennaro, who snapped the picture of the ladies for their next CD cover, never could have imagined the place it would have in history. "I didn't know what the Web was," he said later. "When history happens, you don't know that you're in it."

July 18 marks the photo upload's 20th anniversary.

Mercy Johnson Speaks About New House & Car: 'My Husband Surprised Me With Them'

Nigerian actress Mercy Okojie nee Johnson who arrived Nigeria from the United States Of America last month has received surprise gifts from her husband.

In this recent interview with Adeola Adeyemo, the actress said her new house located in Thomas Estate in Ajah, Lagos and the new car she is driving are surprise gifts from her husband, Prince Odianosen Okojie.

See the detail interview report below;

It’s great to see you Mercy. Let me start by saying that you have a beautiful home.

Thank you. It was a surprise from my husband, Odi. He didn’t tell me about it while we were in America and when I returned back to Nigeria, I thought we were going to our former house but he drove me straight here. And then he also gave me a new car with the plate number ‘Odi’s Wife’.

Aww, that’s so sweet. There’s been a lot of media attention surrounding the birth of your daughter and her recent dedication. How does this make you feel?

At a point, I actually felt the whole thing was over dramatized. I really appreciate the fact that some people wish me well and are happy for me which is why I share her picture on Twitter once in a while. On my Twitter page, more than 3000 people ask me about Purity every day. Sometimes I get overwhelmed but I’m grateful for the love and goodwill messages and I can only say thank you.

Purity is quite a unique name. What inspired her name?

When I asked my husband, he said “You. She reminds me so much of you.” He said I have a good heart and he’d really want her to have a good heart and clear conscience like me. And he’d wish for everything about her to be pure.

As a first time Mom, how has the experience been so far?

It’s magical, it’s awesome! I just can’t stop staring at her. When I was pregnant, my sister-in-law came to the house and when her son pooped I said “Oh my God, don’t let it touch my chair!” Then I was about six months gone and she just looked at me and said “In three months time, you will understand”. And really, it is true. Now when Purity poops, I begin to dance. Everything is special. I want to clean her up myself, dress her up myself. I just can’t explain, she makes me complete.

Has pregnancy and motherhood affected or changed you in any way?

Well, you can see, I’ve added so much weight. But aside from my physical appearance, having Purity has changed me so much as a person. Having her makes me want to set the right example, to have good records so she doesn’t get embarrassed when she’s grown. It changes my perspective to life and the way I react to things. I tolerate things more, I overlook things more. I love children generally but now I understand how precious every child is to their mother so I try to treat other children the way I’d want her to be treated if I’m not around.

Let’s talk a bit about your career and what brought you into the limelight. What inspired you to take up acting as a profession?

I’ve had too many criticisms for saying this but I actually had just one inspiration and it was Genevieve Nnaji. When I got into Nollywood, lots of things later inspired me to do the things I do but she triggered my interest. I watched her in the movie “Sharon Stone” and I knew I wanted to act.

What were you doing around that time?

I had just finished Secondary school and so between that time and trying to get into the University that I launched my career.

Getting a big break is often difficult for a lot of aspiring actors. Was it easy or difficult launching into the movie industry?

For me, it wasn’t that difficult. There were challenges here and there but it was basically about how you can present yourself as an actress.

When did you feature in your first movie and how many movies have you featured in till date. This was in 2003. If I want to be humble I’d say over 50, if I want to pose I’d say over 200. But really it is quite a lot. You know the way we do movies here it’s just on and on and on in several parts.

Tell me about your childhood. What was growing up like?

I was a tomboy. I am the fourth child from a family of seven children. The first four are girls and the last three are boys so I actually moved a lot with my brothers, climbing trees and stuff like that. We didn’t get everything we wanted but we got everything we needed. I’m from a very humble background, a Christian family. My Dad is an ex-military officer and we basically grew up in a Military environment. I attended Navy Primary and Secondary Schools until I went to the Lagos State University before I deferred.

What were you studying at the University and why did you choose to defer your studies? I was studying English and I deferred at the time I was moving to my 200 Level. I was sort of very busy with my career, acting here and there, making money and it got into my head. But I’d love to go back to school.

To Lagos State University?

No. I’d love to take up some acting lessons or study a course in Acting since that is what I’m into.

Your profile on Wikipediasays you got into acting because you failed your University Entrance Examinations. Also, there were some reports about you leaving school because you weren’t so good with your academics. Are these reports true? I banged my JAMB, yeah that is true. I had to write JAMB twice. But it is not true that I wasn’t good with my academics. I didn’t have issues with passing my exams at school.

What is your definition of a sexy woman?

Sexy is inbuilt. It’s just how you feel about yourself. For me, sexy is confidence. It mustn’t be about the Malaysian hair or the Gucci bag or the big bum. It’s about you liking yourself just the way you are.

But most people would call you sexy because of your figure… For me, it just runs in my family. I don’t work out or do anything. I’m just trying now to work out and swim to lose weight and get back to work so Odi doesn’t get to call me Orobo again. When I bath Purity in the morning and I see the curve of her hips, I say “Oh my God, Odi. Purity has hips” then he says, “She is just 4 months old, shut up”.

That’s funny. Now that you mention your husband again, tell me about him. When did you meet him and how did the love spark between both of you?

I met him in 2009. We had met before on a flight and I didn’t remember but we met again in 2009. He is a good person. I can’t really tell how it started. We kinda clicked and started dating just about the same month and it feels like we’ve been married for four years because since we met, we’ve been really into each other we’ve been really close.

He must have known you were an actress then. How did this affect the way you started off your relationship?

Yes he did, but he didn’t know I was that big because he didn’t really follow the movie industry. Sometimes you meet some guys and they get intimidated about you but not with him. The first time we were supposed to have a date, he said “Let’s go to my house so you can cook for me” and in my mind I was like “Seriously, this guy doesn’t even know my name”. So I said “My name is Mercy Johnson” and he said “Yes I know”.

What is the most romantic thing he has done for you recently?

He got me a new diamond ring different from my wedding band. I kept saying I want a new band, something really big and he got it for me. He is extremely loveable.

In the weeks before your wedding, some controversies sprang up and there were speculations that the wedding may not hold. How were you able to pull through this period?

I knew my wedding was going to hold. It is easy for people who are outside a box to try to explain the inside of a box without coming inside. People who didn’t know anything had lots to say. But it was fun to let them have their say. If having your say makes you feel better, I can’t take that fun away from you. But we in the box knew what’s up and people who wanted to know what was going on actually came into the box and knew the truth.

Was there anything new that you learnt during that period that you didn’t already know?

No. It was just shocking how people would bring negativity into what’s positive. I think that was the only thing that was new to me.

Google ranked your name as the most searched celebrity in Nollywood for 2011 and 2012. Are you proud of this?

When I asked my husband if it a good thing and he said yes it is. I know that it’s not possible for everyone to like me so good or bad, if you ever googled Mercy Johnson’s name, thank you. If you didn’t google, google won’t say I’m the most searched so thank you, keep googling.

Do you have any affiliation with the gossip website mercyjohnson.com?

No, I don’t have any and I’d like to stress that please. I don’t know why somebody would do a magazine and call it Mercy Johnson Celebrity Magazine or why somebody would take my name and put it on a domain for a gossip website. I can’t even use the domain name anymore and I’m so pissed. I am only on Twitter. I’m not even on Facebook anymore because somebody put up a Facebook account in my name where they put up inspirational messages on my behalf and I don’t even know where that is coming from.

What else do you do professionally apart from acting?

I do lots of charity. The Mercy Johnson Foundation for Children and Widows is very active and that takes most of my time for now. We make donations; we give out school materials to students and go to hospitals to distribute drugs and medical equipment.

Let’s talk about your style. What influences the kind of clothes you wear?

I don’t wear what is in vogue or what everybody is wearing, I just wear what suits me and I’m lucky to have a physique that encourages everything I wear. My husband is a huge critic so when he compliments my dressing, I feel so good. He doesn’t believe that exposing anything makes you look better. He feels when you cover up, you look real nice.

Would you say your personal style has changed since you got married?

You know, you get wiser by the day. Sometimes when I look back at some old pictures, I’m like “Seriously, did I wear that?” I’ve learnt a lot since I got married and I know that if I had gotten married earlier, I wouldn’t have made most of the errors I made. When you are married to somebody who is so organized, he brings you up the right way and reminds you of who you’re supposed to be.

Just as we were about rounding up, an elderly woman brought in Purity who had just woken up from her nap. Mercy took time off to play with her and nurse her but not before saying “that is the best mother-in- law in the world”. After I had some time to cuddle the little cutie, we continued.

Is there any particular reason why you decided to gave birth to her in the USA?

No, I could have given birth here but I was at a point in my life where everything meant a lot to me. By God’s grace, I got pregnant barely a year after I got married and I just wanted everything to be fine. Not that it wouldn’t have been fine here in Nigeria but it would be odd for us to say we are not aware of the lapses in our health care system.

What are your dreams for 2013?

To get better in my career, to work with more matured scripts and improve on everything I do. However the most important things to me now are my husband and my daughter so I want to do everything in a manner that would be befitting for them.

Private Jets Used To Smuggle Cash, Fugitives - FG

$

The Federal Government on Sunday said illegal consignments and cash in local and foreign currencies were being smuggled on daily basis in and out of the country aboard private jets.

It also said some persons that securities agencies had declared wanted were being airlifted out of the country aboard private and chartered jets.

As a result, it insisted that pilots flying such jets must declare the passenger manifest before being allowed to take off.

An aircraft manifest contains the names of all persons aboard the plane, among other things.

The Coordinating Information and Communications Manager for aviation parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, told reporters in Lagos on Sunday that the order for the declaration of passenger manifest was necessary to check the abuse of the use of private and chartered jets.

He said for security reasons, especially the need to arrest those who had constituted security threats to the country, the government would not renege on its decision for pilots of private jets to file their manifests before being given Air Traffic Control clearance.

Dati said security operatives had disclosed that many wanted persons were being smuggled out of the country with private jets.

He also stated that some wanted persons were being sneaked into the country without appropriate checks as many private jets take off from private facilities at airports.

Dati spoke on the heels of the criticism that have trailed the introduction of some new policy measures for the private jet sub-sector in the country.

The government had through the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2013 unveiled two weeks ago directed pilots of private jets to file their manifests before obtaining ATC clearance.

It also said foreign registered private jets could only spend 15 days in the country, just as the policy also barred private jet owners from carrying friends and business associates.

Aviation stakeholders as well as the Action Congress of Nigeria had, however, severely criticised the policy, saying most of its provisions were not obtainable in any other part of the world.

An aviation expert and former Military Commandant, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Group Captain John Ojikutu, said the demand for passengers’ manifest on private aircraft could only be done by the State Security Services.

“The need for passengers’ manifest on private aircraft, if required, can only be the responsibility of the State Security Services, and in the case of private aircraft on international flight, the Nigerian Immigration Service,” Ojikutu said

But Dati insisted that what the government wanted to do was to monitor the operations of unscheduled flights as well as their manifests due to the current security situation in the country.

According to him, charter services by private jets have become a lucrative business in the country and 80 per cent of the private jets have private licences, but carry out commercial operations.

This, he said, constituted safety challenges because aircraft with private licences were not being subjected to compulsory maintenance checks as those with commercial licences were made to do by the regulatory body, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.

He also regretted that about 80 per cent of the 150 private jets operating in the country were registered overseas; a situation he said exempted them from paying taxes and five per cent charges to the NCAA.

Dati said, “So, when you collate what government agencies lose by the illegal operations of these aircraft, it amounts to over N25bn in a year. And I can authoritatively tell you that it is now a lucrative business that businessmen bring in aircraft to operate as private jets, while they are actually used for commercial purposes.

“So, it makes nonsense of those charter operators who follow the laid down processes and whose business has now been taken away by the illegal private operators.”

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde is one actress that remains sexy and classy despite being a mother of four grown up children. She competes easily with most single stars in the razzmatazz industry in Nigeria, commanding a large number of secret male admirers.

In an industry, where many male fans would do everything possible to get any female celebrity they admire, there is no doubt that Omotola would not be left out of such.

Though not in the news with romance scandals, it is very certain that the queen of Nollywood and one of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to TIME Magazine, had been in situations, where she would have to chase male admirers away.

Speaking on the issue, the glamorous actress admitted that she has male fans, who want more than friendship from her, adding that she deals with the issue in her own way.

According to the delectable Ondo State-born movie superstar, “when you (men) hang around for a while and you don't get anything, you will decide what you want to do (laughs).”

She added that, “I don't think you have to run from anybody, nobody is going to come and rape you. So, it is not a life or death situation. It is as simple as two adults, three friends, and after a while, if one has an ulterior motive, understanding that it's not going to happen, then you can handle it with maturity.

“So, they will decide whether to stick around or go away. Why do we have to fight in the process?”

A man sexually abused a peacock, which was later found dead in his garage, according to authorities in Illinois.

Roselle police report that they discovered the dead bird, named Phyl, and learned about its abuse while investigating an alleged case of indecent solicitation of a child, NBC Chicago reports.

David Beckman, 63, of the Chicago suburb, Roselle, faces three charges of harassment by telephone, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of drug possession, attempted indecent solicitation of a child, cruelty to animals, and two counts of battery NBC Chicago reports.

Both the battery and solicitation of a child charges stem from a case earlier this week in Roselle, which involved a child between the ages of 13 and 17, according to the Daily Herald.

Beckman was being held at DuPage County Jail on Friday on $10,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for June 12.

Sadly, the alleged animal abuse isn’t the only one to make headlines recently. In April, Kurtis Peterson, a Michigan man, was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for having sex with two dogs.

In February, Andrew Mendoza pleaded guilty to public lewdness and criminal trespassing for trying to make a baby with his neighbor’s horse. “I was thinking it would have a horseman baby,” he stated in a court document.

In front of a small crowd at a church in New York, a man named Phillip Patterson completed his handwritten King James Bible after working on it for seven years.

An event was held Saturday at St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church in Spencertown to mark the completion of Patterson’s Bible, the Register-Star, Hudson, N.Y., reported.

Patterson, who said he was encouraged to hand-write the Bible by his late partner, Mohammed, a Muslim, wrote the final words in front of the gathering.

Patterson said he did learn some things from the process: “You have to think for yourself.”

Despite suffering from the effects of AIDS, Patterson said he never doubted he would complete the Bible.

“It’s almost as something in the universe spoke to me in its own language,” he said, adding that he was “in the zone” while writing the book.

Now that the Bible is finished, Patterson says he plans to continue his life in the community.

“I will still be loving my community, my family. That won’t stop,” he said.

My Husband Feels Good When Other Men Admire Me - Omoni Oboli

Popular Nollywood actress, Omoni Oboli, turns heads whenever she steps out on the red carpet. The pretty actress told Saturday Beats that she believes her husband feels proud when she steps out and people admire her.

She said, “My husband feels good when I step out for a red carpet event and other men admire me. Everyone likes to show off something that they like and something they think is beautiful. I think it is a good feeling for him.”

Having been a chorister in the past, music is a familiar terrain for her.

“I’m not saying I will go into singing, but never say never; I was in the choir when I was growing up,” she said.

She told Saturday Beats that although she maintains a tight schedule, she cooks for her husband as often as she can but not every night.

The actress said, “My husband is very supportive so it makes life a lot easier for me. I try to give my family quality time when I have time. I cook for my husband often; of course not every night. I do so most times when I’m around and he wants something special. We have somebody who cooks for us. I wouldn’t deny that. If he wants something special, then I’ll prepare it. If I feel I need to do something special for them. I like to bake for them a lot. So I do that often.”

A representative of Enough is Enough Nigeria, an NGO aimed at getting a positive change in the country, Oboli decalred that she would use her status to sensitise people to the power of their vote.

“I think Nigeria is a great country with a lot of potential, I represent Nigeria. My role in representing Enough is Enough is to use the goodwill that I have gathered from people who believe in me to make sure that when the time comes to get together and vote for a leader, we will actually go out to vote. Last year, what we did was to have a massive campaign to tell people to vote.

“You want a better leader and you are not doing anything about it. You have to come out, make sure you vote and when you do, you have to protect you vote, stay and wait for it to be counted so that you will know that your vote counts. That is my role in this,” she said.

Going down memory lane, she told Saturday Beats that her first kiss scene in a movie was with dark-skinned actor, Desmond Elliot. She stated that she did not feel uneasy doing so as they were both professionals.

The delectable actress also described Figurine as one movie she would not forget acting in a hurry. It remains the most stressful movie she has done so far, according to Omoni.

“My first kiss movie was in Unfinished Business and that was in 2007 or 2008, I am not sure. It was okay. It was with Desmond Elliot. It was make-believe so there was nothing to feel uneasy about. We are both actors, so we both know what we are doing. The viewers saw it and thought it was amazing and that is the most important thing.

“Figurine got me dirty; I was dragged down the stairs. It wasn’t easy. The Figurine shoot is one of the most tedious I have ever had. It was the most stressful shoot I have ever had. The high budget was mostly the technical part of it, but the shoot itself was so stressful, it was unbelievable,” she said.

State Of Emergency Is A Setback To Nigeria's Democracy - Northern Youths

Alhaji Yerima Shettima.
Northern youths, Tuesday, lashed out at the Federal Government for slamming state of emergency on three northern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, describing the move as punitive and a serious setback to democracy.

They contended that the declaration of emergency rule in the affected states did not only negate the recent amnesty committee to dialogue with Boko Haram members but equally showed that the government was insincere in raising the committee in the first place.

This position was shared by the Presidents of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima and his Arewa Youth Forum, Alhaji Gambo Gujungu, in separate interviews with newsmen.

Shettima, who described the action of the government as a ploy to further humiliate and expose the people of the north to avoidable hardship, regretted that the administration had continued to take actions that deny the people the true benefits of democracy.

The ACF leader, who questioned why Bayelsa State was not included on the list despite the large number of policemen killed by kidnappers and militants in recent weeks, noted that the action was deliberately taken to punish the north.

On the other hand, Gujungu noted that the President should have adopted a political approach to resolve the insurgency problem rather than apply the stringent rule, which he noted, would lead to serious suffering on the part of the citizens of the three states.

“The emergency rule declared in the three states is unfortunate, politically-motivated and totally uncalled for,” he noted.
